29 may 2018 -Hike patrol towards Korab waterfalls
Althoug the summer is just arround the corner, high into the Korab massif the spring has just aweakend. Korab has still quite enough snow at the higher areas while in the lower areas, as hiked up the route for the Korab waterfall, above Dlaboka River valley, on the slopes below Ribnicka Skala and Kabaš, a steep snow tongues and snow remainings were present.
The Korab waterfall is in his full power, bursting of water, and the surrounding is covered with flowers and high mountain herbs -everywhere.
Besides the waterfall, at the moment there are numerious smaller waterfalls and streams making the whole hiking adventure a full wildernes experience.
When in his full power the Korab waterfall is arround 130m high (waterdrop lenght). The waterfall is forming from the snowmelt of Mal Korab and Korab Gate. The waterfall full power is reached with the comming of he spring monts, trough April and May. In this months the waterfal is true nature attraction as well as the rest of the wildernes scenario that the nature reveals.
This past winter, mount Korab accumulated a huge ammount of snow, which remains and snow tongues are still present on steep and exposed slopes along the hiking trail that leads to the watterfall. While hiking this route in this period, one should be fully aware and careful while traversing the snowtongues. 3 season hiking boots, hiking poles are neccesary. On some particular sequences the snowtongues are steep and long, and in case of a slip&slide on snow tongue the risk of injury and catastrophe is high.
The trail that starts from Ribnica village is 13km long, the trail is well marked and in good condition. During the spring period, a waterproof hardshel jacket and hiking gloves are recomendend inventory in your rucksack due the rapid weather changes. At the start you might even feel to warm, but once you enter Mount Korab hearth, an alpine climate is present and very often can be pretty cold even during a sunny day with clear skies.
